Today on NewsOne Now, host and managing editor Roland S. Martin spoke about his attendance at a protest rally at the North Carolina General Assembly yesterday to fight NC Senate Bill 873. This bill was crafted to decrease North Carolina HBCUs tuition while cutting financial funds. Political editor and panelist Lauren Victoria Burke spoke to the increasing troubles HBCUs have had to face over the last few years and how this particular bill adds to the list. “Every state legislature plays this game with HBCUs especially if there is a Republican governor which there is in North Carolina. HBCU funding over the last 8 years have had the hardest time in three decades,” said Burke. Also on NewsOne Now, a young woman who fired warning shots at a gunman who murdered her fiancé is now facing felony firearm charges. During the conversation, panelists called out the National Rifle Association (NRA) for being silent in showing support for a Black woman facing felony charges over warning shots in self-defense. “When it’s George Zimmerman it’s okay, when it’s this woman there’s a problem,” said Burke. ![]() ABOUT NEWS ONE NOW: Emanating from the heart of Washington D.C. in a state-of-the-art studio that offers a stunning view of the Capitol building, News One Now airs Monday through Friday on TV One from 7-8 a.m. ET.
