Whether a new episode or a re-run, the latest Cosby 'episode' not made for TV!

After a recent conversation with a female friend I could see just how divided we are on this matter. The difference is as simple as the genetic male/female makeup. Growing up with all women has made me sensitive to the female point of view. I'm no activist but I also don't need a chaperone while walking down the women's care aisle at Wal-Mart. Perhaps that's where the sensitivity and empathy end. After I shared my opinion with my friend, the tone of the conversation changed completely. And in typical 'Fred' fashion, this spurred a thought...a very deep one. "How have these allegations affected me?" Personally, there's no affect at all and I believe Bill Cosby will be proven innocent when given due process. But to her and many women worldwide, it's simply another case of yet another powerful person abusing a helpless victim.

You don't say...?

Special thanks to comedian Hannibal Buress who calls out Cosby in his bit. He's performed it on many stages but his routine caught the attention of the world. Not to mention, he was in 'Cosbytown', PA (Philadelphia). I find it remarkable that this story has gained traction after a black comedian called out Cosby. Has that  been the missing link all these years (nearly 30)? What if a black athlete had gone on record and said believed O.J. Simpson was guilty, would that have turned the tide of public perception?

You can scratch Janice Dickinson off that list

Prepare for descent...

Well, you and I both know the dynamics of this carnival ride by now...prepare for the big Cosby stock sell-out...er,off! Appearances will be canceled and shows pulled from syndication in the coming days and weeks all the whole public perception dips quicker than a kindergartener's spoon into jello! Mr. Cosby needs to address these allegations, and soon. The longer the delay, the shorter the list of supporters becomes.

I hope he speaks out soon to quell the rumors, address the allegations head on and at the least, speak up for himself. I've never met Mr. Cosby and the closest I've ever come to such is when his rep informed me that he would not be doing interviews when he came to Fort Worth's Bass Hall.

So...how has this affected me?

Bill Cosby is another human being...I know he's seemed other worldly because he's generally kept his nose clean all these years. If he IS actually guilty of these heinous crimes, I'd lump him in with some of my other favorite comedians who've acquainted themselves with trouble: Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx, Eddie Murphy, and Robin Williams. It's time for 'The Cos' to endure due process and I trust that justice will be served by either a conviction or exoneration

Personally, he'll always be my favorite funny man of all time but for now, these allegations are no laughing matter!

When you think of the Texas Voter ID law, think MONEY!

10/27/2014

I voted last week and as I walked out of the polling location I had an epiphany. Voting in Texas is as easy as it ever was for me. However I realized that some people may be struggling to figure out the new Texas Voter ID law. Below I've shared my perspective and I can only hope that it's helpful to potential voters ahead of the November 4th vote.
More helpful perspective from the office of the Secretary of State.

Don't let ignorance cost you your vote!

Picture
When you think of the Texas voter ID law, think money. As a proud member of Generation X, I have trouble accurately processing anything that can't be spelled out  ''XYZ''. This is why the Texas voter ID law is more enigmatic than pragmatic.

When you think of a Texas photo ID think money. Why? Because any ID you can use to vote, indirectly involves money to be made or spent.

*A driver's license: think of driving, gas costs you money and you drive to work (to make money) everyday.

*To cash a check: after you've worked 40 or 80 hours you need an ID to cash your paycheck and most banks will ask for your drivers license without fail.

*If you want to write a check you will need to present your drivers license along with the check in question.

*If you are in a circumstance where you do not have a valid drivers license the next viable option is a Texas ID card.

This ID card identifies you as a legal resident of Texas. If you do not possess
a valid Texas drivers license, a Texas ID card will be acceptable in lieu of the drivers license.  In essence, it all revolves around money! If you want to make money or receive money you need identification. Think about that as you go to the polls, take the ID cards that you would use either presenting, receiving or making any monetary transaction. This is acceptable voter identification!

Now let's be real here for a second...
Most voters like myself never used their voter registration card anyway! I'm an early voter and I have always used my drivers license at the polling place. So for, me the Texas voter ID law doesn't affect me at all. Some politicians would argue that there are sectors of people grossly affected by the law. If this is true, what we must do to rectify any potential
endangerment or injury to potential voters is simply ensure that all voters have access to acceptable identification.

If not a driver's license, a Texas ID card. Other forms of acceptable ID include: a Texas DPS issue conceal handgun license or a passport. A passport is indicative of traveling, which also involves money. There is no traveling a person does without cost. If you will need a passport to travel, you will certainly need money...THINK money when you think of the Texas voter ID laws in 2014.

To summarize this, simply ignore the political rhetoric surrounding the Texas voter ID law and ask yourself this pertinent question: ''what's in your wallet?'' Do you have a valid Texas driver's license or Texas ID card? Most people over the age of 18 possess one or the other. Don't fall for any political rhetoric or white noise (saying nothing at all), simply go to the polls an educated voter and take either your: Texas ID card, drivers license, US Passport, Texas DPS issued CHL or other form of approved ID. You only need one!

Strangely, this has actually simplied the voting process so ignore those who try and make it too difficult!

Acceptable forms of voter ID (as prescribed by the office of the Texas Secretary of State)
  • Texas driver license issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS)
  • Texas Election Identification Certificate issued by DPS
  • Texas personal identification card issued by DPS
  • Texas concealed handgun license issued by DPS
  • United States military identification card containing the person’s photograph
  • United States citizenship certificate containing the person’s photograph
  • United States passport

You can move on, even if 'they' haven't

9/23/2014

This video has since gone viral and for good reason. Not many people open up and share hurt they've experienced in life, of course having an international platform takes a bit of the sting away.

Sheryl Underwood is hailed as a heroine, standing tough in the face of those harsh words heard over the muted speakerphone. She has continued a successful stand up career and has made numerous guest appearances on talk, television and radio shows.

As days have gone by, the Queens of Comedy have chimed in and aren't taking the stand up queen's story  sitting down. They are ready to talk and have aimed their shade squarely at Ms. underwood.

Let's face it, we've all been there...'they' have  said something that hurt...bruised our self esteem or was downright mean. It hurt, especially when you heard it directly from them. 'They' varies with each story, but so does the triumph.

Underwood made it clear that she'd moved on and holds no ill will to her would be co-stars. The question is: "why are they mad?"

Well, wouldn't you be mad if your dirty laundry was aired...without you even knowing it existed? Crazy, right?
Well, for those 'Queens of Comedy', there's a lesson here. That lesson is this: Sheryl has moved on, now you have to as well!

By being the first to tell the story, Underwood has assumed the position of power and more than likely won't be vilified by the public.

Even if you're not a Sheryl Underwood fan, you can't help but appreciate the way things turned out for her. Closer to home, you have to also appreciate the inherent truths this story also provides...

Sometimes, 'they' are right and just don't know how to tell you! Sometimes, people's questions about you are actually harmless.  Sometimes you have to just get over what they said and go prove you belong where they are. We hate new stuff. We hate anything that's going to upset our balance and will fight to keep it from happening.

However, if you're going to grow in life, you'll need to be willing and able to read beyond caustic commentary to receive the free advice others are unwillingly sharing.

For me, it was revealed while on my last tour in Japan that some people I know well didn't think too highly of my ability to play and lead the band while on tour. So much so that it'd become a topic of conversation over family dinner. Other musicians were a little more vocal, asking amongst their circles: "how did he get that gig?"

First things first, I take no credit for any level of success I experience. I am fully aware that without God, nothing is possible. Secondly, questioning can be something great for you and 'them'. I'm sure the original 'Queens' wondered whether or not Underwood could pull her weight on tour and whether she'd be a good enough draw in the absence of Mo'Nique.

There are numerous variables in this curious case. What if Sheryl went? What/where would she be now...? All we have now are questions, but I want to suggest that sometimes you have no other choice but to go!

I have sat in the same room while other people made fun of my playing and ability. Not so silent whispers in the green room during intermission don't feel good. Making matters worse, the person who hired me to play was sitting right in the middle of all the childish chatter, giggling right along. That hurt the most and I can identify with what Sheryl Underwood felt.

Still I had no other choice but to stick it out, actually work on what was being mocked and allow moments like that to shape me. I'm not a quitter and although convenient, it's never an option.

"...But by the grace of God I am what I am..."

Sometimes you just have to stand up in the muck and mire and prove you belong there! God makes no mistakes and his placement of us in situations are all in His divine plan. Sheryl Underwood is comfortable sharing this story now because as she said she's 'right where she belongs'.

In closing, please understand that we must be willing to grow if we'll ever go (anywhere)! People will say things to each other that they may never say to you and that's  perfectly fine!!!!!!

Think about it like this...what if those words were never heard? Many other words were uttered, but how many have been heard? Perhaps a thank you is in order for Underwood as well.

Those words exchanged in that private conversation undoubtedly hurt,  but they also helped. Perched atop her lofty platform on mainstream daytime television, Underwood is one of the truest beneficiaries to ever breach the threshold of the door of denial!

Learn how to walk through the door of divine denial.

Until...when...?

This just hit me yesterday as I was reading a script which contained one of Dr. King's speeches. We have NOT achieved his dream. Yes, the American President is African-American but that fact reveals the true depth of hate that still remains in this country. What we have achieved in most circles is complacency. Yes we get along with all races but what about the people we can't see. What about states like Mississippi (mentioned in the "I Have a Dream Speech") who just recently took the large step of "officially" abolishing slavery?

As much as has been done, we're still NOT done with this! Black History is American History and I would be persuaded otherwise. So,until this big dream is achieved I think I'll march on! Who's in?!? This country can't even begin to think of immigration reform when it can not reform the centuries of racism and institutionalization of the offspring of the slaves unjustly brought to this country. The drum major's footsteps are mere footprints today, but the march continue. "Until justice rolls down like water..." as he quoted the Prophet Amos...there are many "until"s. Until we see them all achieved, then we can retire from the march. Then and only then..

You can't fulfill empty promises...

8/9/2014

Satan's empty promises only fulfill empty people!!
I was thinking about Jesus in the wilderness and being tempted by Satan. The Lord shared with me how Jesus was able to answer Satan when he spoke to Jesus. Jesus was able to resist Satan's advances because Satan couldn't deliver what he promised.

The bible says that Jesus was led into the wilderness to be tempted by Satan. He was directed to the wilderness to be tempted by Satan after fasting 40 days/nights. Jesus was hungry and Satan tempted Him concerning food.

Jesus was proven to be able to multiply fish and bread for the multitude, so it's hard to imagine Him being powerless to 'create' the meal Satan was promising to prepare. Satan tempted Him with the very things Jesus could do('miraculously make/multiply food, be royalty on earth, rule the earth, etc).

What Does This Mean to Us?
The Lord caused me to revisit the story of creation. As I revisited the creation story, I was reminded of the statement 'let us make man in our image'. We are made in the image and likeness of the triune Godhead. What does this mean? Well, Satan lost everything he had and was condemned to an eternity in hell. Satan is also powerless against the Father,Son and can not quench the Holy Spirit. We too are created with these characteristics though we are human. Jesus was the ultimate slap in Satan's face. He guaranteed that NO ONE would ever be 'like' Satan. Even though Satan tempted Adam and Eve and death came to an entire dispensation, Christ defeated Satan in this realm and will defeat him in the age to come!

So...when we are experiencing hardship or the oppression of the enemy, let us be mindful of exactly who we are! Jesus was full of power, yet vulnerable(hungry) when He was led into the wilderness. Tempting and testing occurs in times like these in our lives. It may seem a little oxymoronic that Jesus was full of power yet had to endure testing. He had to face the enemy's advances and NOT give in. Many of us face our most intense testing when we are at our fullest spiritually and our emptiest naturally.

Look Who's Talking
Something has to be more vocal. Had Jesus' stomach done most of the talking, he would have simply given in. He later showed the power of fasting and praying in Mark 9 when the disciples weren't able to exorcise a demon. Something in us has to become more and more vocal as we grow in our walk with Christ. As food is essential to our natural man, the lack of food is essential to our spiritual man! Otherwise, we become spiritually vulnerable and susceptible to succumb to Satan's attacks.

Whatchu Talkin' Bout, Devil???
Have you ever thought about this...Both Jesus AND Satan knew that he couldn't deliver on the promises he was making! It's comical that we give in to the enemy's temptation knowing that there is a TRUCKLOAD of consequences coming behind our satanic decision! It's more than a notion to just shake off his advances at times because it is EXACTLY what we 'need' in life. The temptation reaches us when we are tired of waiting on God. A phone call for a job, that ex that jilted you wants another chance and will do anything to 'make it right', you get an inside track to how to make money without getting in trouble. All kinds of scenarios pop up when we are 'in need'. Even when Satan temps us with his empty promises(though they sound so awesome) we should challenge him with a good ol Arnold Drummond-esque "Whatchu Talkin' Bout, Devil??

All in all, Jesus showed us how to answer Satan...by/with every word that preceedeth out of the mouth of God.(Matt. 4:4) We must be ever mindful that Satan can't promise us anything God hasn't already guaranteed to those that love Him. Empty promises only fulfill empty people. Jesus was empty and weak in the natural but strong and well girded in the Spirit. When the enemy comes, we should be prepared with a ready response. For Jesus, preparation for his response was days and nights of telling food NO.

Satan can't promise us anything that God hasn't already guaranteed to those whom he loves!!! Love God, fill yourself with the things of God, this way Satan's empty promises can in no wise affect you!!!

A real Father's Day

6/15/2014

The best gift some fathers will ever receive is the gift of forgiveness! As long as we hold them in unforgiveness, they'll never grow beyond the stupid, immature, mislead, fearful decisions they made and some of our mothers made to keep them out of our lives.

Happy Father's Day (including my birth father who IS on fb),it's God to forgive. Forgive and LIVE! And while you're at it, be grateful for the step-in dads out there who helped us along the way!  Those people include: J.B. Horton, Rev. Joe A. Foster,Joseph Hobson Jr. (Uncle Joe) and my late grandad Leroy A. Wilson,Sr.

Thanks to these men and the steady presence of my mother Valerie Wilson Mitchell I was kept on the right path. As a young man growing up in a gang infested neighborhood, gunshots were heard in lieu of a lullaby.

I wasn't on this journey alone however, I have two sisters who had their own shares of struggles. The three of us grew up without the presence of a father in the home but it was at church, and family presence that the men in our lives filled in for our birth fathers.

This Father's Day was a bit peculiar for me because forgiveness has come again. As a father raising my own children,I see the importance of my presence in their lives. I also see firsthand the way Father God views us,His children.  Because God kept His hand on me and my sisters,we can't live as if He didn't. By this I say this:all roots of bitterness, malice and contempt must be replaced with gratefulness.

It could have been us who fell into the trap of fatherlessness by immature parents, drug abusers, gang members and criminals. God kept us and we each acknowledge that. Accompanying gratefulness and gratitude is forgiveness and the release of resentment that has become a plague in the community at large.

I could hate my father, but I choose not to! I have to forgive him and release him into his God ordained destiny that no mistake or lack of familial commitment can ever hold him from. Paul said it best  that nothing anywhere shall be able to separate us from the love of God. (Rom. 8:37-39)

My mess ups may not include not taking care of my family (Paul told Timothy that the man that doesn't is worse than an unbeliever-I. Tim. 5:8) but God's forgiveness isn't limited to the scope of our reality! God is faithful to see His work come to pass in our lives and the same applies for absentee fathers. Who knows when, but with the first step is often forgiveness coupled with gratefulness!

...daring to dream again...

2/2/2014

Over the past week, I became entangled with a thought...have I given up on my dreams? Truth is, I was desperately close. I still play, sing and own music instruments and recording equipment but am I really still pursuing my dream of music?

With college courses completed, academic accolades aptly emblazoned on my resume, everything points to a pursuit, but of what? Sitting in HR, the career of music is misinterpreted as a hobby by unsuspecting hiring managers.  Did I really commute to college an hour each way for a hobby or was in pursuit of something?

Life will ask these questions and at the same time demand answers from you! So I had to fess up and admit that I'd given up. I've been in the presence of almost anyone a gospel musician/artist would ever want to meet. What's more important, is I've met the people who can connect me to the rest of the people I've never met. I mean, I could even score a phone call in place of a timeless picture together.

So why have I somehow settled into the "crowd"? There are a number of reasons, too many to list and explain here. The road on the pursuit of a dream is lonely. The nights are long, fiends are few, and opposition knows no bounds. Beyond self doubt, doubters and the run of the mill "haters", the pursuit of a dream requires thick skin. What "they" never tell you is that you need many layers of "thick skin". Otherwise you will become consumed by the weight of the pursuit.

I am writing this here on my site and not in either of my online columns. See, I've accomplished alot, but still not the goal! Do columnists get discouraged. Yep! Top 20 artists on Reverbnation in their home area,do they get discouraged too? Yep. What about musicians who have travelled internationally and toured across 5 European countries,do they get discouraged? Sure WE do! We get sidetracked and plain and simple...beat down!

I don't want to go to every musical in the metroplex, nor do I want to go to every guild meeting(announcer/musician) just to "network". My home life dictates that I come straight home right after work. A fortunate night is a night where I can look again at my dreams soberly and say "yes I still can!"

So...how do I believe in my dreams again? Don't I need to revamp them since I'll be 30 next week? Aren't I smart enough to somehow find a back road into the music industry or can't I just dig in and look the music industry in the eye and announce my imminent arrival?

Depends...

In "The Wiz" Dorothy encountered Glinda the good witch. Glinda sang to Dorothy and even kind of preached a little bit. Glinda said, "believe in yourself like I believe in you!" The awesome part about this statement is that Dorothy was vulnerable enough to make known what her dream was-getting home. Her friends also made known their wishes, this led them on the whirlwind adventure to meet The Wiz.

Turns out The Wiz had some insecurities of his own, even though this fearsome foursome sought him out as their ticket to the fulfilment of their wishes. The music/entertainment industry is much like The Wiz himself, complete yet imperfect.

So with that being said...I have dared to believe in my dreams again! There are notebooks  flooded with songs and ministry ideas compiled in America and Europe. It's time to give life to mere words on pages. I dared to believe in my dreams again...

Do You Believe???

Are you living up to your God given purpose?

Picture
Fred at Mount Fuji, grasping all that the Lord has ordained for his life.
Are you living up to your God given purpose, or living down to the opinions and expectations of others?

What a question; and just in time for the new year, a new challenge! During the Christmas season, a show topic on SoulProsper Radio prompted some serious thinking. On the Christmas show airing on the Freedom Through Faith Christian Radio Network, a question was asked that challenged not only listeners, but the host.

Reading from Isaiah 9:6, the prophet lists the attributes of the coming Messiah. Fast forwarding to the New Testament, it becomes clear that he is all those things. While you could simply assume that by supernatural providence He became all those things, which is an incorrect assumption.

Christ was human and divine. Though conceived by the spirit, he breathed the air of humanity. In fact, “Christ” is translated “Messiah” or “Anointed”. Jesus Christ was literally anointed to be the savior of all mankind.

Anointed: To choose by or as if by divine intervention.

Dying for the sins of the world was easy because He was anointed and made the choice to do so, right? Wrong, another incorrect assumption.

For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Heb. 4:15

How did Christ survive all the temptation to veer off the path of purpose?

1. He kept purpose at the forefront of his everyday life. Lk. 2:41-52
Jesus here is 12 years old and is in the temple teaching and sharing with the elders.

2. Jesus worked the work of the Father at all times. Lk. 8:19:21
This exchange is rather bothersome to many at first read. However, a deeper glance into this text will reveal Jesus’ use of parables in teaching. In Luke 8:10, he used Isaiah’s words (Is. 9:6) from centuries earlier.

3. Even as He began his ministry, Jesus kept the final work in mind. Fasting 40 days in the wilderness (Luke 4) and even praying in Gethsemane kept Christ close to the Father.
Being a person of purpose comes with the requirement of time spent alone with the Father. It’s in this time that you are able to reconnect with the Father and be recharged in the midst of life’s challenges.

4. Jesus walked in divine authority at all times. Lk. 4:14:30
After His tempting in the wilderness, Jesus went to Nazareth and taught in the temple. After they marveled at his wisdom, they questioned His paternity and later drove Him out of the synagogue to a cliff.

Pilate addressed Him as King of the Jews as He stood in His court! Mk. 15:9.

As we all know, Jesus fulfilled His earthly task. Paul later states that because of this He is given a name above every name! Phil. 2:6-11

Picture
Following these four steps will keep us connected to the Father’s purpose for our lives at all times. Jesus knew the scripture and taught from it in the synagogue. In today’s fast moving world, it’s easy to leave the bible and communion with God out of your daily routine. Remember God’s words to Joshua, newly appointed leader of the Nation of Israel in

Joshua 1:8
This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

Jesus quoted this Psalm on the cross and fulfilled yet another prophecy:

My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? Ps. 22:1

There will be times when the purpose filled person will feel the same way. For those moments, I refer you

 Joshua 1:5
There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

There will be challenges and hardships but remember what the Lord has said: “…I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.”

Who are you today? Are you who God has said you are? Have you let yourself, family or God down? Believe it or not, He still says the same thing about you!

In Jeremiah 29:11 the Lord comforts the Nation of Israel by reassuring them that their captivity was still a part of His plan. “I know the plans I have for you…” If His plans are certain even in times of difficulty, so should our determination to do His will be!

Life is not a reality show!

Even if your life isn't picture perfect, live your reality and never forget your "image" was created from God's!
You wanna know something? I'm really tired of the way life is playing out for many of us! We live life as if camera crews are following us around all day. We spend money as if the masses need to see it, update social media with our every whim and treat each other as if our interactions are all for ratings!

Preachers of LA is one of televisions' hottest docu-series. These preachers deserve all the attention they command. The primadonna and lead Deitrick Haddon is as flaky as box potatoes and keeps viewers confused and scrambling in the scriptures after each show.

With their new found notoriety, the preachers appeared on the Arsenio Hall Show a few weeks ago. At the close of their segment, Arsenio challenged them all to a "Preach Off". Their subject was simple: "Life is NOT a reality show". The preach off was supposed to pit each preacher against the other but in a fateful turn, each preacher actually said good things!

I've been holding onto that topic since they preached it. By the way, all of them were surprisingly good and relevant!
My take on it? Life really isn't a reality show! As the Real Housewives of Atlanta returned to television, Nene Leakes remarried her ex-husband, Greg. Before the show and her wedding special aired, news reports leaked about the outstanding debt and awful amount they owed for the lavish wedding. RHOA castmate Kenya Moore was in the news fighting an "illegal" foreclosure. There's no shortage of drama with reality television...

Now what about your life? Life throws us all curve balls, but we don't get those breaks like the stars on television. If you get a court notice, you go to court. If your bank account is upside down, you put money in the account!

These differences should remind us that real life is light years away from what is presented as "reality". So, I'm proposing this to all of us: LIVE LIFE! In fact, live YOUR life! Precious moments slip by us as we wait for the perfect time to update our status and tell Facebook all about it!

Kim Kardashian was surprised with a proposal at a ball game and her step-father, Bruce Jenner wasn't invited (even though her mother knew about the proposal ahead of time) because it didn't fit with the current "story line" on Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

How crazy is that? Are Bruce and Kris Jenner even separated? If you get your reality from television, you may as well jump in the box with 'em! Life doesn't always afford us opportunities to "wait for the cameras to stop rolling" before we can make up with a loved one after an argument or mend a friendship after a falling out.

Do what you can today and live your own reality! Do you owe someone a "thank you"? Tell them while you can speak and while they can hear! I've waited for the 'perfect time' and have ended up saying it over a casket at a funeral.

Love now, live now...live your reality!
